  • Nigerian Newspapers sell over 7 million copies daily.
  • The majority of the daily newspapers in Nigeria are published in the English language. Just a handful of the daily newspapers in Nigeria are published in the local languages.
  • Nigerian Newspapers provide a rich source of news on political issues, sports, business, fashion, crime, sex and scandal.
  • A regular daily Nigerian Newspaper may count between 25-60 pages, and can sell for between 60-120 naira (approximately equivalent to 0.51-1.00 U.S. Dollar) on the streets of Nigeria .
  • Most Nigerian Newspapers are distributed regionally with only about six being distributed throughout the country: Three of the better known of these newspapers are the Daily Sun Newspaper, Thisday Newspaper, and The Guardian Newspaper.
  • The Sun Newspaper is the most widely circulated newspaper in Nigeria.
  • There are both private and government owned newspapers in Nigeria
  • The federal government does not own or have controlling shares in any Nigerian newspaper . However, some state governments own and control newspapers in Nigeria.

It is also the reason why anytime you see a news story which appears on a Nigerian newspaper with a reporter’s name (and photo), it means that the editors consider the report to be a mixture of fact and opinion.
  • News syndication is rarely practiced in Nigeria, and as a result; Newspapers in Nigeria do not get much of their news content from the same sources as is the practice in the United States where two U.S. news agencies –Associated Press (AP) , and United Press International (U.P.I) provide much of the content used by U.S. newspapers .
  • The tradition of digging out the dirt and exposing it for all to see and hear is widely practiced by privately owned newspapers in Nigeria. .As a matter of fact, most Nigerian newspapers will not hesitate to blow the whistle whenever they come across political corruption and business malpractices involving public figures. The editors of privately owned newspapers in Nigeria are very aware that when something which has been hidden behind closed doors is moved to the front pages, it can very well sell millions of Nigerian newspapers.
